Mental health and work: assessing function

A diagnosis and absence duration do not replace an individual assessment. The question concerns documented functioning in a defined period and context.

INEM editorial team · Editorial update: 13 September 2026 · General information, not an individual medical assessment.

Why is this relevant now?

In ZUS data for the first half of 2026, mental and behavioural disorders accounted for 18.2 million days of absence due to insured persons’ own illness. This provides context for careful assessment, not evidence of misuse or a basis for judging an individual.

What may a physician clarify?

Consistency of evidence, the course of treatment, documented limitations and the limits of the agreed questions. Work demands and the assessment period must be defined. Assessment should not rely on a stereotype associated with a diagnosis.

Commissioning and assessment method

INEM checks the match between specialist and evidence. Video is a planned option subject to suitability, not an automatic solution. The video service is in development. We do not replace treatment or public authorities’ assessments.
